A simple and fun method to germinate seeds using cotton balls
Are you ready to learn how to grow your very own plants without using soil? Germinating seeds on organic, unbleached cotton balls is a fantastic and easy activity, especially if you have kids! It’s a great way to show them how seeds sprout and start their journey to becoming beautiful plants.
Why use cotton balls?
Using cotton balls for germination has some awesome benefits:
- Soil free: This method is perfect for indoor growing. (No gnats to deal with too!)
- Easy to monitor: You can easily see the seeds and sprouts.
- Fun learning experience: Kids can watch the magic of nature as seeds transform into plants.

Materials needed
- Seeds: Choose your favourite organic seeds.
- Water: To keep the cotton balls moist.
- Organic unbleached cotton balls: No chemicals, just pure cotton.
- Clear container with a lid: We like to use take out sauce containers because they’re the perfect size!
Step by step instructions:
Step 1: Prepare your container
Start by placing several organic unbleached cotton balls into your clear container. Make sure to leave some space between them.
Step 2: Add water
Next, pour in enough water to thoroughly dampen the cotton balls. Be careful not to soak them! You want them to be damp enough for the seeds to germinate without becoming overly wet, which can cause mold.
Step 3: Place the seeds
Now, take one or two seeds and gently place them in each indentation made within the cotton fibres. The cotton will help keep them cozy and moist!
Step 4: Create a greenhouse effect
Cover the container with the lid. This will create a greenhouse effect, helping to keep moisture and warmth inside, which is perfect for seed germination.
Step 5: Find the perfect spot
Place your container in a warm area where it can receive indirect sunlight. It’s important to keep an eye on the moisture level of the cotton balls every day. If they start to feel dry, add a little water!
Step 6: Watch them grow
Depending on the type of seeds you are using, you should see sprouts emerging from the cotton balls in a few days to two weeks.

Transplanting your seedlings
Once your seedlings have grown a bit, it’s time to move them to a new home. Here’s how to do it:
- Gently remove the seedlings: Carefully take the seedlings out of the cotton balls, making sure to keep a little cotton on the roots. This will help retain moisture in their new environment.
- Choose your growing medium: You can transplant them into soil or even a hydroponic setup. In our experience, we love transferring them into our DWC Hydroponic setup for a fun and effective growing method!
Germinating seeds using organic, unbleached cotton balls is not only a simple process but also a wonderful way to introduce kids to the world of gardening. It’s a fun activity that teaches them about nature and how plants grow. So gather your materials, follow these steps, and watch the magic happen! Happy growing!
