If you’re a beginner gardener looking for easy to grow, low-maintenance plants, lettuce and kale are excellent choices.
Both of these leafy greens are not only easy to grow but also provide nutritious harvests throughout the growing season. We like to grow these in the garden because they are great cut and come again crops

Lettuce: Cold weather resilience
Lettuce is known to withstand cooler temperatures, making it an ideal crop for early spring or late fall planting. Varieties like Romaine and Leaf lettuce can thrive in temperatures as low as 4°C.
This cold tolerance allows gardeners to extend their growing season and enjoy fresh salads even when the weather turns chilly.
Additionally, lettuce grows quickly, usually ready for harvest within 30-60 days after planting.

Kale: winter survivor
Kale is another fantastic option for beginner gardeners due to its hardiness. This leafy green can survive winter conditions and even improve in flavour after exposure to frost.
Kale can be planted in the Fall for a winter harvest or started in early spring.
It typically takes about 55-75 days from seed to harvest. In its second year, kale can produce seeds if left to flower, allowing gardeners to save seeds for future planting.

Growing tips
Both lettuce and kale like well-draining soil with organic matter. Water regularly. These plants do well in full sun but can tolerate partial shade.
We will definitely be growing these plants this coming Spring season!
