A Guyanese gem
Spicy, flavourful, and tiny but mighty, these are just a few ways to describe the wiri wiri pepper. If you’ve never heard of this fiery little pepper, you’re in for a treat! The wiri wiri pepper is not just a staple in Guyanese cooking, it’s a special ingredient that brings flavour and tradition to the table.
What is the wiri wiri pepper?
The wiri wiri pepper is a small, round chili pepper that grows in Guyana, a country nestled on the northern coast of South America. It’s easy to spot because of its vibrant red or orange colour and its marble like size.
But don’t let its size fool you. This little pepper packs a powerful punch! It’s known for its intense heat. Clocking in at about 100,000 to 350,000 Scoville Heat Units!! Alongside the heat, wiri wiri peppers have a fruity, smoky taste that makes them incredibly versatile in cooking. They add a unique flavour to stews, sauces, marinades, and even drinks!
Why is the wiri wiri pepper so important?
For Guyanese people, the wiri wiri pepper is more than just an ingredient, it’s a symbol of heritage. It’s a key part of Guyanese cuisine and has been passed down through generations. Many traditional dishes wouldn’t taste the same without it, and for people who grew up in Guyana or in Guyanese households abroad, its flavour is a nostalgic reminder of home. Char’s dad is from Guyana, but he could only get a hold of either scotch bonnet or habanero at the shop in Canada. (Which is still a great alternative!)
Beyond its cultural value, the wiri wiri pepper also plays a role in preserving Guyanese culinary identity. Guyanese food is a melting pot of influences from Africa, India, China, and the Caribbean, and the wiri wiri pepper perfectly embodies this fusion of flavours.
How to grow wiri wiri peppers in a pot in Canada (Zone 5b)
Do you live somewhere cold, like Canada? No problem! You can still grow wiri wiri peppers in a pot (like a 5 gallon container) Here’s how!
What You Need:
- 5 gallon pot or grow bag (with drainage holes at the bottom)
- Good, rich potting soil
- Wiri Wiri pepper seeds
- A grow light
- Water and a little fertilizer
Steps to Grow Your wiri wiri Peppers:
- Start the seeds indoors: Since Canada has a short summer, plant your seeds indoors. We like to start them as early as January to February)
- Plant the seeds in small pots with soil and keep them warm and under a grow light
- Wait for them to grow: After about 1-2 weeks, you’ll see little green plants sprouting! Make sure they get lots of light and water them when the soil feels dry.
- Move them to a big pot: Once the plants have their true leaves, move them to the 10-gallon pot. Fill the pot with soil, make a little hole, and gently plant the pepper plant.
- Take care of your plant: (Check our previous post on how to transition plants from indoors to outdoors)
- Once your plant is hardened off and ready
- Put the pot in the sunniest spot you can find. Peppers love sunlight!
- Water regularly, but don’t let the soil get soggy. They like moist, not wet.
- Watch them grow: After a few months, you’ll start to see little green peppers growing. When they turn bright red, they’re ready to pick!
