How to Grow Ginger Indoors
There are many variations on how to grow ginger.
Things to consider:
We bought our organic ginger from the grocery store. Select plump not dry, and ones that show “eyes” or growth buds that may sprout.
We like to soak the ginger rhizome in water overnight. This helps to stimulate growth and ensures that it is hydrated. After soaking, you can cut larger rhizomes into smaller pieces, make sure each piece has at least one eye.
We used a wide shallow pot because ginger roots grow horizontally rather than vertically. Container should have drainage holes.
We used a potting mix rich in organic matter. A mixture of potting soil, compost, and perlite or sand.
Plant the prepared rhizome 2-4″ deep in the soil with the eyes facing upward. Space them about 12″ apart if planting multiple pieces in one container.
We watered lightly daily and picked the warmest spot in our house with indirect sunlight, ginger prefers temperatures between 21 – 29°C.
Growing under LED grow lights:
These lights are efficient and produce less heat
For lower wattage LED grow lights 15-90w, they should be placed at least 15″ away from the top of the ginger plant.
For higher wattage LED grow lights 240-400w, they should be placed between 16-30″
As your ginger plant grows, it’s important to watch their height and adjust the distance of your grow light accordingly.
We feed our ginger plant every few weeks with worm tea.
When is it time to transfer ginger outdoors? Wait until all danger of frost is gone, usually late spring or early summer.
It may take up to 10-12 months for best harvest.
Happy growing!
