Here are 3 ways to hang a vertical herb garden using the 1L wide mouth mason jars.
This can also be done indoors or outdoors.
OPTION 1: USE THE LID TO HANG THE JAR
ITEMS NEEDED:
- Hammer
- Drill
- 1 ¼ Screw
- Long Nail
- 1L wide mouth mason jars
- Take the lid and remove the cap
- Using a hammer and nail/screw, make a hole on the inside of the lid.
This will make it easier to screw the lid on to a board/wall - With your planted herb in the jar, twist it into the lid
OPTION 2: USE A 4.5” ADJUSTABLE HOSE CLAMPS/STRAPS
ITEMS NEEDED:
- 4 ½” adjustable stainless steel hose clamp/strap
- Hammer
- Drill
- 8×1 ¼” Screw
- Long Nail
- 5/16 socket wrench
- 1L wide mouth mason jar
- Grab the hose strap and using a hammer and nail/screw, make a hole on the inside of the strap.
TIP to center the strap, strap it in to the bottle and mark the opposite end of the strap. - Screw into the board/wall
- With your planted herb in the jar, gently tighten the screw with a 5/16 socket wrench.
Careful not to over tighten.
OPTION 3: USE WIRE TO CREATE A HOOK
ITEMS NEEDED:
- Wall hook
- Long Nail
- 16 Gauge Galvanized wire
- needle nose pliers
- 1L wide mouth mason jar
- Wrap the wire around the top end of the bottle, the wire should be just below the lid groove.
Leave one end about 2-3” long and the other end about 4-5” - Twist both ends of the wire and use the plier to tighten
- With the long end of the wire, make a small loop and twist to secure
- Install the wall hook in place and with your planted herb in the jar, hook it in place.
ADDITIONAL TIPS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
- Paint the jar white to reflect off heat and protect roots
- If you wish to add better drainage, you can drill a hole on the glass by submerging the jar under water and carefully drill a hole.
- Consider placing under protective cover from rain if no drainage hole is made.
PLANTING TIPS:
To create a drainage/reservoir, place rocks or pebbles at the bottom of the jar about 3-4” high. This will create a separation between water and soil. Water sparingly and see tips above for outdoor use.
